Accident: Root River, ON. Lat 50.54N, Long 91.40W. 12-Aug-1986.
During the take-off run on the narrow river, the aircraft veered to the
left towards the shoreline. The aircraft struck a mud shoal, damaging the
floats and the tail section. Thepilot was performing his first flight with
the contracting customers. The landingon the narrow river was uneventful,
and, later that day, the pilot attempted to takeoff into the current with a
quartering tail wind from the left. Directional control was not maintained
during the take-off run, and the aircraft veered to the left towards the
shoreline. The pilot shut down the engine, and the aircraft struck a mud shoal,
damaging the floats and the tail section.
PERTINENT INFORMATION: The pilot said that he had never operated
in such a confined area before although another company pilot had
previously operated there. An unconfined lake was available close by.
The landing area selected by the pilot was in proximity to a dam where
the passengers were to do some work. The current was strong, and the
water level was low, thus exposing numerous mud shoals along the
narrow river. The pilot decided to take off into current with a 12- to 18-knot
quartering tail wind from the left. Had the take-offbeen attempted into wind,
the strong current would have delayed the take-off and made it difficult
to clear some high posts located over the dam. The pilot also decided to
take off downwind since the shape of the river was more favourable
in that direction.
