The aircraft did not gain sufficient speed to become safely airborne prior to reaching the end of the strip and collided with the bank of a river which was across the end of the strip. He reversed his direction in order to remain in VFR and decided to land at Nanaimo. . However the fog had also closed in behind him. Consequently he decided to land on the water near Valdes Island which he had in sight. During the landing approach, just prior to touch down the aircraft entered a fog bank. The pilot suddenly saw the shore of the Island at right angles to his flight. He immediately banked the aircraft to the left and at the same instant the right float struck a large log situated on the rocky shoreline. The aircraft suffered substantial damage.
