USAF History

51-16477 was made available to the AMO (Air Material Overseas) unit of the USAF at Downsview on 21-Mar-1952, accepted 01-Apr-1952 and delivered on10-Apr-1952 to the San Bernardino Air Material Command depot at Norton AFB. It was re assigned to the Far East Air Force (FEAF) 5th Air Force, and shipped to Japan on 03-Jun-1952 to Kisarazu and the 6400th Air Depot until 26-Jul-1952. There followed an allocation to the 10th Liaison Squadron, initially at Yong Dong Po in South Korea, from 26-Jul-1952 until 01-Feb-1954 after which this unit moved to the purpose built base of Osan ni until 01-Nov-1954. Still at Osan-ni it transferred to the 6171th Air Base Sqd until 14-Dec-1954 and then back to the 10th Liaison Sqd until 15-Mar-1955.

6171st Air Base Sqd

Remaining at Osan ni it moved to the 58th Fighter Bomber Wing on 15-Mar-1955 until 24-Oct-1955 whence it spent a period at the Northern Air Material Area Pacific, Showa Aircraft Factory, Tachikawa AFB in Japan. This establishment, allocated to the Air Material Command was designated, AMP – NAMAR at this stage, and was used by the FEAF as an in depth maintenance and repair base away from the front lines in South Korea where only line maintenance was possible. The aircraft remained here until 31-Mar-1956 and in view of the length of stay possibly to have serious damage repaired. It was then back to South Korea and Osan ni and the 58th Fighter Bomber Wing until 01-Mar-1957.

A move to Seoul then occurred with a deployment to the 6146th Air Advisory Group, which assisted in the setting up of the Republic of Korea Air Force. This initially lasted from 01-Mar-1957 – 31-Mar-1958  and then several transfers back and forth with the 6314th Air Base Group  at Osan ni until 20-Sep-1961 and the 6314th Support Wing at Osan ni AFB until Dec-1963. Whilst with the 6314th there were several field deployments to other bases on the South Korean peninsula such as Kunsan, Kimpo, Chinhae and Taegu.

A short move to Taegu with the Logistics Command, as the Air Material Command was now called, and the Fairchild Aircraft Corporation maintenance facility who were acting as contractors (OLOGFACSF) occurred between 12/63 and Mar-1964followed by a move back to the 6314th Support Sqd.
