USAF History

52-6118 was made available on 01-May-1953, and accepted on 08-May-1953 by the 6600th Air Depot AMO (Air Material Overseas Unit), at Downsview, ON., after which it was delivered to the Tactical Air Command at George AFB., CA and the 1st Liaison Squadron on 08-Jun-1953. It passed over to the 479th Fighter Bomber Wing on 18-Jan-1954 but only for two days as it then moved to the Sacramento facility of the Air Material Command at McLellan AFB., CA., prior to embarkation for Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific Marshall Islands. Here it was attached to the 4931st Test Squadron on 03-Apr-1954 a unit allocated to the Special Weapons Centre. It remained at Eniwetok until 21-Sep-1956 having also spent time with the 4930th Test Group, 4930th Test Support Group and the 4951st Support Squadron (Test).

It crossed the rest of the Pacific for maintenance at Showa, Japan on-21-Sep-1956returning to its previous unit at Eniwetok on 27-Jan-1957. On 09-Sep-1958 it is shown as returning to the US mainland and its parent Special Weapons Centre unit at Kirtland AFB., NM ., until 02-Mar-1960.

It next spent time with the Air Material Command at McLennan AFB., between 17-Sep-1958 7 30-Jan-1959 and then returned to Kirtland on 02-Mar-1960. Now it moved to Goose Bay AFB., for the Strategic Air Command (Overseas) an the 4082nd Strategic Wing until 18-Apr-1960 when it returned to mainland USA and the 4440th Aircraft Delivery Group at Langley AFB., VA., between 18-Apr-1960 until 27-Apr-1960.

Its next move was to the 701st Aircraft Command and Warning Squadron at Fort Fisher AFS., NC., on 27-Apr-1960.

It is understood that the aircraft served with the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Forbes AFB., prior to being struck off charge from USAF inventory on 15-Mar-1965. The aircraft’s further military history is still to be researched.
