Report A80O0051  21/06/80 Bayfield Lake Ontario  4943N 08456W

Fatal 1 Serious 4   Circuit Final Leg  Spin

The pilot had taken off into a south-westerly gusting wind for an 11 mile direct flight in a south-westerly direction to another lake. The pilot flew his “downwind” in a south-westerly direction. The intended direction was almost 180 degrees different from his take-off heading, however the pilot did not question his selection of landing path. During the turn to final, the pilot was concentrating on the shoreline and allowed the aircraft to stall. The craft entered an incipient spin at an altitude of about 250 feet from which the pilot was unable to recover before impact.
